10.20.09 - Granite Becomes the Only Three-Time Winner of Energy Star "Leaders Top Performer" Award

Granite Properties has been awarded the 2009 Energy Star “Leaders Top Performer” award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Granite is the only three-time winner of this award among commercial real estate firms, adding to its wins in 2008 and 2004. According to the EPA, "this achievement demonstrates Granite’s commitment to environmental protection through superior energy performance."

The designation signifies that Granite, through its energy-conscious property development and management, has exhibited leadership in improving average energy performance ratings, while reducing greenhouse-gas emissions.

“We have always invested significant capital, resources and time in pursuit of reduced energy consumption and enhanced operating efficiencies,” says Gregory P. Fuller, Chief Operating Officer of Granite Properties. “This year, our commitment was stronger than ever.”

Nineteen office properties in Houston, Dallas and Denver comprise the portfolio that earned Granite an average energy-performance rating of 84 from the EPA. A rating of 84 indicates that the Granite portfolio’s energy efficiency is in the top 16 percent when compared to the efficiency of similar portfolios. The EPA rating system provides an objective, standardized approach to measuring the efficiency of an entire building, or building portfolio, on a 100-point scale.

In addition to Granite’s volunteer participation with the EPA, the firm is focused on continually enhancing its LEED-designated properties. This spirit of sustainability is not restricted to Granite’s property engineers and managers. Granite tenants are also encouraged to take part in the efforts. Tenants at a Granite property in Houston recently participated in an effort that yielded two massive cargo trucks filled with recyclable electronics, computer components and mobile phones.
